Optimize your Amazon CloudFront costs with these tips

Custom Pricing / Compression

When you commit to a monthly amount of at least 10TB of traffic you can get reduced prices by contacting AWS. An additional step to reduce your data transfer costs is to use next-gen formats like WebP and AVIF. These can significantly reduce your data transfer sizes and thus your costs.

Reduce PoP Coverage

By default, CloudFront delivers the content to all edge locations. This is controlled by so called price classes. If you reduce your price class from price class all to price class 100 you get less global presence (so longer latencies for your customers). You need to find a balance between acceptable latency and global presence.

Alternate Solutions

Fastly is a known good alternative, but it comes at a similar cost to CloudFront when running high data volumes (you do get more features though). Another alternative is to use Cloudflare as a CDN. This calculation requires you to offset the AWS data transfer costs to the external service from the AWS service (for example S3).
